"Sound and Vision" Open seminar

Sound and Vision - about sound and music in contemporary art

With an Artist Talk with Seppo Renvall and Teho Majamäki .

Wednesday 12, January 2010. The seminar will be included in the entrance fee. 5-7 pm
With: Tuomas Toivonen, Vesa Vehviläinen and Suvi Saloniemi.
Painting – seen in its widest possible form – is the common ground for the exhibition that includes sculpture, film, video, installation, sound, music and performance. Many of the participating artists moves between genres and their works includes sound and music. Some of the artists are also musicians, or collaborate with  DJs and musicians. What role have sound and music  played in modern art? What is the relation between music and creativity? How do sound and music relate to contemporary art? The presentations in the seminar focus on the relation between sound, music and visual art with the exhibition the Carnegie Art Award as a point of reference.

The seminar is concluded by an artist talk with film pioneer and Carnegie Art Award artist Seppo Renvall and Teho Majamäki.
As co-founder of the Helsinki Film Workshop in the late 1980s, Seppo Renvall is a pioneer in Finnish experimental film. His films are characterised by an abstract imagery in black and white and a non-narrative structure that often focuses on the apparently commonplace and everyday, the things we tend to overlook, things just behind our shoulder. The rhythmic flow of images is crucial, thus logically connecting image and sound. In consequence, Renvall collaborates widely with musicians, DJs and audio specialists.

In Finnish. The Kunsthalle is open until 8pm.

Teho Majamäki joined the seminar live from India
