Tuula Arkio was born in Helsinki in 1943. She received a Master’s degree from Helsinki University in 1968. During the period 1962–1968 Arkio was employed as an assistant at the Gallen-Kallela Museum and in the Department of Art History at Helsinki University. She was employed at the Ateneum Art Museum (Finland’s national museum of art), first as curator 1968–1970, then as chief curator 1970–1980, and finally as deputy director 1985–1990. In 1990–2000, Tuula Arkio served as director of Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, and in 2000–2006, she was senior director of the Finnish National Gallery (Ateneum, Kiasma, Sinebrychoff and the Central Art Archives). She has among other things co-curated the important international exhibitions ARS 83, ARS 95 and ARS 01 in Helsinki. Arkio serves on a number of boards for Finnish and international art and museums. In 1998–2001 she was on the jury for the Carnegie Art Award. She is an honorary member of CIMAM and Finlands Konstindustriella högskola (Finnish University College of Industrial and Fine Arts) and has an honorary PhD in Visual Arts (2006). Since 2007 she is chairman of The Pro Arte Foundation, Finland.
