Isabel Carlos was born in 1962. She has been an art critic and curator since 1991 and has held several prominent roles, including that of Adviser on Exhibitions for Lisbon 94 – European Capital of Culture. She was also the co-founder and Deputy Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art under the umbrella of the Ministry of Culture (1996-2001), a role in which, among other duties inherent in the post, she organised the Portuguese exhibitions at the Venice Biennial in 2001 and the São Paulo Biennials in 1996 and 1998. Isabel Carlos has also served as a member of the Venice Biennial Jury (2003) and the Turner Prize (2010), among others. She was the Artistic Director of the Sydney Biennial (2004), the curator of the Portuguese Pavilion at the Venice Biennial (2005), and the curator of the ninth Sharjah Biennial in the United Arab Emirates (2009).
For 2012 Isabel Carlos will serve as the international jury member for the Carnegie Art Award. Iwona Blazwick, María De Corral, Suzanne Pagé and Robert Storr have previously served in this role.
