Klara Lidén

Klara Lidén explores the space between the private and public spheres, both physically and mentally. In films, performances, installations and sculptures, she studies and challenges conventional boundaries. Lidén began her studies at the Institute of Architecture in Stockholm but moved on to study art in Stockholm and Berlin. Her early interest in the architecture that surrounds and influences us, is reflected in several of her works. In this exhibition, we present three works from her series of Poster Paintings, which are exactly what the title suggests: four-inch wads of posters glued together. These poster sediments come from Berlin, where they are a typical feature in the urban landscape. Lidén’s addition, a white top sheet on this multilayered work, instantly transforms these old posters into a veritably monochrome painting or wall object, simultaneously both a blank sheet of paper and a wealth of information that is hidden from our gaze. These works are also indicative of Lidén’s eye for both the mundane and the specific in a given environment, and the invisible that is made visible. With simple methods and locally-found materials, in her own brand of recycling, she contemplates and searches for alternative approaches to quotidian life, in works bursting with compressed energy.
