Ann Edholm has a sculptural approach to painting, in the sense that she regards it both in relation to the space and to her body. Her painting is always abstract and frontal, and there is a monumental and veritably physical quality to her work. The strongly graphic and geometrical motifs have a tendency to dissolve on closer scrutiny, the colour and evidence of the hand behind the painting appear in the form of brushwork or fingerprints in the paint, influencing our perception of the scale of the paintings. Edholm utilises a process where everything is intermixed and eventually engenders series of works. This exhibition features three works from the series Tungan på ordet (Tongue on the Tip), a reversed paraphrase of a common figure of speech. Originally, the series was intended to consist of 14 paintings, like the 14 stations along Via Dolorosa, but the number eventually doubled and was complemented by a painting titled Übergang. The paintings in this series can be combined and shown in a variety of constellations, to create different narratives. As an example of the rich source of inspiration Edholm finds in art history, this series was based on such disparate works as Grünewald’s Isenheim Altar from the early 16th century and Picasso’s Guernica from 1937.
