Stein Rønning

The musical term “variations on a theme” lies close at hand when describing Stein Rønning’s works, which have explored conceptual minimalism since the 1980s. With hand-made shelves, frames and boxes, first in wood and later in bronze, Rønning has created sculptural objects that relate to both the exhibition space and the viewer’s own body. In this exhibition, Rønning presents a selection of works from a series of photos of abstract geometric, sculptural still-lifes. These images are preceded by an intricate process. He starts by tearing paper into rectangular shapes that he then draws and eventually cuts out of wood and combines to make square volumes of varying dimensions. These are placed on a base made of the same material and photographed with a large-format camera. Finally, the images are digitalised and meticulously processed. The colours in these works are limited to shades of blue, white and grey. The cubist shapes refer to the minimalist idiom and have a strong architectonic feeling, while the motif and the surrounding space appear almost painterly in contrast.
