Ragna Robertsdóttir

Ragna Róbertsdóttir has been working for many years in an idiosyncratically minimalist style of landscape painting, where the works not only depict the Icelandic landscape but actually consist of it. Her materials are gathered by the artist herself from different places around Iceland, including lava, sand, clay, finely-ground shells, and so on. After sorting the material meticulously it is glued to rectangular surfaces directly on the wall. The formats often relate to the existing architecture, for instance replicating the dimensions of a door or window, as an allusion to the traditional perception of painting as a window to the world. The resulting meditative monochromes vary in appearance depending on the position of the viewer, and, notwithstanding their serenity, they can comprehend both erupting volcanoes and veritably archaeological findings from a distant seashore. In the new works in this exhibition Róbertsdóttir has used a different natural material: salt. A salt solution has been distributed on a glass surface, and as the liquid evaporates the crystallised salt has formed Mindscapes, salt paintings that, in all their simplicity, convey a natural process and a topographical miniature landscape.
