Per Inge Bjørlo uses a wide variety of techniques and materials. Common to all his works, be they paintings, prints, sculptures or installations, is that they visualise inner, mental landscapes and spaces consisting of memories and events. With materials as varied as steel, light, glass, rubber and mirrors, he creates complex works that often defy straight-forward categorisation. Bjørlo has received extensive recognition for a series of installations titled Inre rum (Inner Spaces), especially for the first one, created at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in 1984. This work consisted of a room covered from floor to ceiling with an array of rubber objects, from hoses to tyres and blasting mats, and interspersed with these, large, expressive linoleum prints. The title of this significant work is characteristic of his entire oeuvre, and the work was to have a strong impact on installation art in Norway. This exhibition features two new works, Colour follows form follows psyche I and II, which comment and complement each other. With these two works, Bjørlo explores painting, his own inner spaces and how colour and volume are decoded and experienced differently depending on their shape and materiality. However, like all Bjørlo’s works, they should be experienced visually and intuitively, rather than be explained in words.
