Hildur Bjarnadóttir

With a profound and extensive knowledge of traditional Icelandic textile craftsmanship, such as knitting, embroidery and crocheting, Hildur Bjarnadóttir initially studied at the textile department of the Icelandic Arts and Crafts College. However, her interdisciplinary methods soon prompted her to pursue her studies in Fine Art. With a conceptual approach, combined with a deep respect for textile traditions, she stretches the boundaries between applied and fine art. Making references to a variety of styles in art, and with subtle irony, she undermines the habitual perception of textile work and uses both materials and techniques experimentally. Urban Color Palette, Reykjavik, featured in this exhibition, consists of 21 canvases, woven out of wool threads pre-dyed with different weeds and mounted on stretchers. The plants were gathered by Bjarnadóttir in central Reykjavik, along the roadsides, between buildings and on empty lots. The colour scheme of these monochrome paintings represents an undesired, unusual and veritably unacknowledged part of the city centre.
