Kjersti G. Andvig

Born 1978 in Oslo, Norway. Lives in Oslo, NO and Berlin, DE.
Making historical references to the women, les tricoteuses, who knitted while watching the executions during the French Revolution, Kjersti G. Andvig’s work, No one here is innocent, deals with the relationship between capital punishment and knitting. In the summer of 2006, she made contact with a man in Texas who had been sentenced to death, Carlton A. Turner. Her initial intention was to teach him to knit, but over time, this developed into an infinitely more complex project. Based on texts, sketches and drawings by Turner, Andvig has knitted a replica of his cell. Using a traditional female, contemplative craft, she conveys an existential and emotional image of a condemned man and society’s views on life and death.
