Iwona Blazwick

Iwona Blazwick has been Director of the Whitechapel Gallery in London since 2001, from 1997 until 2001 she was Head of Exhibitions at Tate Modern and from 1987 until 1993, Director of Exhibitions at the ICA in London. She has curated many monographic and themed exhibitions of contemporary and modern art. She has also commissioned art projects and selected international survey shows as an independent curator in Belgium, Denmark, Italy and Japan. She is a critic and author, contributing to numerous catalogues and artists monographs; she was co-editor of Tate Modern’s The Handbook and Century City. She is series editor of Documents of Contemporary Art published by Whitechapel and MIT Press; and originated Phaidon’s Contemporary Artist Monographs and Themes and Movements series. She has served on many juries including the Turner Prize, the Vincent, the Max Mara Art Prize for Women and the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale. In 2008 Iwona Blazwick was awarded the OBE for services to the arts. A visiting tutor at art colleges and academies in Europe and Canada, she has honorary degrees from the London Metropolitan University and the University of Plymouth and is a fellow of the Royal College of Art.
