Sigrid Sandström

Born 1970 in Danderyd, Sweden. Lives in Stockholm, SE and New York, US.
Sigrid Sandström is interested in how we experience a site, both real-life places and the ones she constructs on canvas, and the various aspects that affect this experience. She focuses primarily on the landscape motif, how it can be understood as a concept, as a physical place, and as an emotional experience. Where her earlier paintings spring from an interpretation of real places, albeit with abstract and slightly deconstructed features, such as icy oceans, glaciers and snow-capped mountains, the subject matter in her more recent works seems evolved from the painterly process itself. The landscapes are built up layer by layer, like theoretical painterly collages, with a high degree of complexity that gives concrete form to imaginary spaces. Although Sandström sees herself mainly as a painter, she has also made film, sculptures and installations in recent years.
