Anastasia Ax

Born 1979 in Stockholm, Sweden. Lives in Stockholm, SE.
Anastasia Ax creates drawings, sculptures, videos and performances, frequently mixing techniques in her works. She has been acknowledged mainly for her remarkably physical performances exploring various kinds of violence and their consequences. In a veritably exorcistic action, Ax portrays a world characterised by violence, oppression and abuse of power, both between society and the individual and in the individual, in the form of self-destructiveness and mutilation. The exhibition features The Kid Below, where enormous white sheets of paper form the backdrop, mute sculptural figures are her co-stars and black ink the weapon in a wildly aggressive attack. She takes full command of the events and, unlike the traditionally passive role of women in historical painterly performances, she is far from being a victim of circumstance. What remains are the distinct traces of a flowing dramatic scene.
