A K Dolven

Born 1953 in Oslo, Norway. Lives in London, GB, and Lofoten, NO.
Since the late 1980s, Anne Katrine Dolven has been absorbed by an exploration of white. This has generated subtle, abstract paintings, photos and films that all enhance our perception of the world. She chooses her medium depending on the issue she is dealing with, but both her films and photos are often exceedingly painterly, and are closely associated with portraiture, painterly composition and time. Time, especially, is a crucial common denominator of all her works. The more time the viewer gives them, the deeper the understanding, and the more nuances and possible interpretations are revealed.
The work in this exhibition, tilts only (his shirts), can be read as a tender portrait that includes both presence and absence. A line of gently billowing shirt sleeves whose materiality dissolves into an abstract pattern of stripes and lines, referring both to her own white painting and to works by other artists, including Bridget Riley’s optical patterns investigating the dynamics of vision, or Barnett Newman’s Onement series.
