The Carnegie Art Award was established in 1998 to support professional artists in the Nordic countries and to promote contemporary painting. In slightly more than a decade, it has become an established and recognized part of the Nordic art scene. With a total prize sum of SEK 2.1m (EUR 234.000), the Carnegie Art Award is one of the world’s largest art awards. Several of the artists recognized through the Carnegie Art Award are now well known not only in the Nordic region, but also internationally.
All participating artists and the award winners are presented in an extensive exhibition shown in the Nordic countries. The tour is inaugurated and the awards presented at a formal ceremony. The first prize winner is awarded SEK 1 m (EUR 110.000), the second prize winner SEK 600 000 and the third prize winner SEK 400 000. A special scholarship of SEK 100 000 is awarded to a young artist. Many of the most respected and noticed artist in the Nordic countries have been awarded the prizes through the years, amongst them Karin Mamma Andersson, Torsten Andersson, Nathalie Djurberg, Kristján Guðmundsson, Olav Christopher Jenssen, Jesper Just, Clay Ketter, John Kørner, Petra Lindholm, Tal R, Nina Roos and Mari Slaattelid.
The Carnegie Art Award is intended for artists born or living in the Nordic countries. Artists who have participated previously in the Carnegie Art Award exhibition can be nominated again. All nominated artists are invited to contribute up to five works each. The works have to be produced during the last two years, to capture the current state of Nordic contemporary painting.
During the time the Carnegie Art Award has existed, interest in contemporary art has increased significantly among media, the public, companies and auction houses. Since the start more than 50 exhibitions have been made in seven countries, with more than 350 000 visitors. But the most important part is that over 170 Nordic artists have been extensively presented and introduced for a wider audience both within the Nordic countries and abroad. Through educational programmes made in collaboration with the visited venues, contemporary art and painting is discussed and conveyed to the general public and to visiting schools.
